𝐄𝐠𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 - 𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐬𝐨!

Imagine this -you book your trip to Vietnam and start sharing your news with others. More than once you are told- “You have to try the egg coffee”. Egg Coffee? I don’t think so! I imagined floating chunks of scrambled egg or a hard yolk on the bottom of the coffee. It just sounded like a no go.

When arriving in the country and meeting the travel guide I shared my love of coffee. “Well don’t forget to try the egg coffee!” I was again told.

I started to negotiate with myself. I will have the condensed milk coffee, the coconut coffee, even the salt coffee but egg coffee- hard no. I just couldn’t get my head around it.

My naturally curious mind was engaged. I started to wonder what it is about the egg coffee and while I have a very clear image of just how uninviting it sounded, I decided that I too, must join the egg coffee bandwagon. Was it a trick that all past travellers have joined in on passing forward? Was it possible that egg coffee was not the atrocity I had conjured up? It reminded me of the roller coaster of change that we often experience.

Denial - no way is this egg coffee is a thing

Resistance - I cannot see myself trying this at all no matter what they say

Exploration - trialling/acceptance/ self-bargaining- ok I will finds a place that looks like it does this and see if I can consider it. I don’t have to actually drink it, it is not like I would die from it. Worst case, I embarrass myself by gagging in public.

Acceptance/ commitment - recruiting others-hey that egg coffee! You have to try it!

I knew I had to be willing to at least consider it in order to make an informed opinion. A simple formula works in this scenario.

Happiness = reality > expectations. (The percentage by which your expectations are exceeded drives happiness)

My expectations of Egg Coffee were dismally low and so to my delight, I can say to others - Try the Egg Coffee. In fact try them all because coffee is king in Vietnam, beer is cheaper than water and good luck finding a glass of wine or whiskey cheaper than at home.
